This carved pot is wheel-thrown, and carved before the clay hardens.  After smoothing  and sanding, it is bisque-fired. The pot is then dipped in a milky white gloss glaze and dipped one more time in aquamarine. The color breaks and falls into the recessed carving, causing an ombre effect.
